2013 teaching units

We are already well into 2013 and I haven't had a chance to explain on here the different units I am teaching.

I'm teaching year 7-10 art and all classes have an 'Asian' focus for the year. This was my choice as it tends to be a favourite theme of mine and it is also part of the new National Curriculum.

All year levels start with a basic colour theory unit and are then undertaking the projects below.

Year 7 art-
paper 3d lanterns
drawings of lanterns on a dyed paper background

Year 8 art-
watercolour and pen patterned zodiac animals
collaged canvases with chinese paper-cuts over the top

Year 9 art-
paper mache peacocks
asian stationery design

Year 10 art-
Watercolour with pen and ink images based on an asian theme
free choice 'asian' influenced piece of art/design.

The students all seem to really be enjoying their projects so far- fingers crossed that this continues.

Teacup and teapot collages

A few weeks ago my gorgeous Year 9 girls finished off their teacup/teapot collages. The year 9's were also working on the Alice in Wonderland idea of the mad hatters tea party.

The class started off by doing blind contour and continuous line drawings of teacups and teapots. We then moved on to learning about realistic drawing of teacups and teapots. Students then worked out a composition they liked and set about collaging on top of their drawing. Paints were then applied and black pen for final details. Some of the results are below. I will post detailed step by step photos of the process in a future post.

I love the one above for its creativity.

I know I shouldn't have favourites but the one above is absolutely divine.

Tea cup and teapot drawings and paintings

Below are some year 8 artworks based on the same principles as listed in my previous post. The main difference is that these students chose to work in colour using watercolour paint.

Teacup and teapot drawings

As I mentioned some time ago on here, my year 7,8,9 and 10 students have all been working  to an Alice in Wonderland theme.

In particular, my year 8's focussed on the Mad Hatter's Tea Party. First of all we studied the elements and principles of design and then moved on to still life drawings. The culmination of these things led to students producing an image of a teacup or teapot that employed the use of pattern, line, shape and positive and negative space.

Some pretty good work if I do say so myself.

More year 9 colour wheels

The next lot of my year 9 students colour wheels are pasted below.

Gorgeous pencil work.

Fantastic use of colour in this collage.

Great use of different textures.

Food wrappers (slightly blurry for unknown reason)

Year 9 colour wheels

I have included some images below of my year 9 students finished colour wheels. Their task was to complete a colour wheel where they thought outside of the box.

Colour pencil and painted origami stars.

Coloured icy pole sticks and buttons.

Cupcake paper wrappers.

Flowers/leaves my student picked from her garden. Colours were
as closely matched as what she had available.

Primary colour collages

I've just finished teaching my grade 7 art class (12 year olds) the basic of colour theory. Below are a few examples of their primary colour collages. I was really thrilled with some of their creative results.

My work place has given me permission to publish photos of my students work as long as I don't publish their names or photos of the actual students.

Colour theory tasks

I believe that colour is one of the fundamental elements of art and design. I always do a series of basic sheets with all my year 7,8 and 9 students, and then give them a more detailed project.

For the year 7's it is often the first time they have done much colour theory. It is more of a refresher for the year 8 and 9's. The practical task they do will change every year so they don't do the same project more than once.

My year 7's main task is a primary colour collage (photos coming)

My year 8's made a secondary colour collage (no photos sorry).

My year 9's complete a colour wheel as creatively as possible. (photos coming)

I have pasted images below of a few of the handouts I use with my students. Feel free to use these with your own classes.

I use the sheets below in my year 8 class.

The sheet below is one I often do with the year 8's as a bit of a fun fill in activity.

Publishing of student work

I had asked my workplace a while back about posting photos of students work on here. I just got an answer- Yay. As long as I don't publish student names and ask their permission I'm allowed to.

I have discussed with my students the pro's and con's and what it all means for them.

I will start posting photos of their work really soon.
